Ngắt giọng là hành động ngừng đọc và để cho sự im lặng (khoảng lặng) trở thành một phần trong câu nói của bạn. Ngắt giọng là một khía cạnh của ngữ điệu tiếng Anh.

Ngắt giọng là một phần quan trọng của ngữ điệu tiếng Anh. Hãy nghĩ đến tiếng Anh với một nhịp đập hay một nhịp điệu. Ngắt giọng giúp bạn giữ cho nhịp điệu này chập rãi và đều đặn. Câu nói có nhịp chậm rãi  và đều đặn sẽ rất rõ ràng và nghe rất tự tin.
Chúng ta cũng dùng việc ngắt nhịp để xứ lý thông tin mới. Nếu một ai đó nói mà không có ngắt nhịp, thì thật khó để có thể nghe và suy nghĩ kỹ càng về ý mà anh ta nói. Ngắt nhịp trong câu làm cho người nghe có cơ hội suy nghĩ cẩn thận về những gì người nói muốn truyền đạt.
Khi bạn nói, việc ngắt giọng cũng giúp chúng ta làm nổi bật những thứ chúng ta muốn người nghe nhớ. Hãy nghĩ đến việc ngắt giọng như _gạch chân_ xung quanh từ khóa.
